A Marchant-style subsampling tray for benthic macroinvertebrate analysis. Spec-identical to the legacy Marchant box where it counts — with a built-in petri-dish lid the legacy box doesn’t have — at half the price.

  • 10 × 10 grid (100 cells) for unbiased random subsampling
  • Watertight lid that doubles as a built-in petri dish
  • Built to the Marchant (1989) design used under OBBN & CABIN
  • CAD $350 — about half the legacy Canadian price
The Bug Box

Overview

The Bug Box is a subsampling tray used to process benthic macroinvertebrate samples. A field sample usually holds far more organisms than anyone can realistically count, so a representative portion has to be subsampled. The box divides the sample across a 10×10 grid of 100 equal cells, letting the technician select cells at random until a target count (commonly 100 or 300 organisms) is reached.

Choosing cells randomly rather than by eye is what makes the subsample statistically representative — and what makes the resulting community metrics defensible in regulatory and client review. The Bug Box follows the modified Marchant (1989) design adopted as the preferred subsampling method under OBBN and CABIN.

Where the Bug Box differs from the legacy Marchant box: the watertight lid doubles as a petri dish for sorting and picking, so a working surface is built into the kit. Everything else meets the same spec — which keeps your data directly comparable — and it lists publicly at about half the price.

How subsampling works

  1. Wash the sample from your sieve into the box.
  2. Fill with water to just below the height of the cell-divider walls. Water depth matters: too deep and live animals can swim between cells after mixing; too shallow and the sample won’t distribute evenly.
  3. Close and fasten the watertight lid.
  4. Invert and gently rock the box side to side to randomize the sample, then set it level and let the contents settle into the cells.
  5. Using random numbers for the 10 rows and 10 columns, select cells and transfer their contents — with a pipette, baster, or aspirator — into the petri-dish lid or a container for counting and identification.
