The Riffle Stick

Overview

The Riffle Stick puts basic field chemistry in your pocket alongside your sampling gear. It’s a handheld pen-style meter that reads seven parameters, so you can capture the water-quality context of a site — pH, dissolved solids, conductivity, redox, salinity, temperature — at the same time you collect your benthic sample.

It’s designed for the same workflows the Bug Box and D-Net support: kick-net sampling days, watershed surveys, and classroom field labs. Calibration is automatic and one-touch, and readings display on a backlit LCD that stays legible streamside.

What the readings tell you

  • pH — acidity or alkalinity, a core water-quality indicator.
  • EC / TDS — conductivity and total dissolved solids, a proxy for dissolved ions and general mineral load.
  • ORP — oxidation-reduction potential, indicating the water’s oxidizing or reducing state.
  • Salinity — dissolved salt content.
  • Temperature — drives oxygen solubility and biological activity.
  • SG — specific gravity of the sample.
